I would get whatever handgun you feel comfortable with. Make sure it fits your hand well and make sure you can handle the recoil. Also, make sure you buy tritium sights if it does not come with them. I would stick with a handgun, but if you like shotguns get a pump action and load it with #4 buchshot. I have a Rem 870 and have replaced the long barrel used for duck hunting or skeet with a 20" barrel and extended shell holder that is easily found. I get 7 rounds in it and the pump should scare the crap out of anyone on the receiving end. My handgun, which I have available for myself, is a sig sauer 245 with an 8rnd mag. This is loaded with a newer federal round that is a full metal jacket silicone backed expanding bullet. It mushrooms like a hollow point, but feeds like an ordinary FMJ. My wife is smaller framed and has a 380 ACP russian semi that is easily controlled. It has Magtech HP rounds that have some punch but hardly any recoil. We also have a decked out Beretta CX4 Storm 40 S&W with surefire light and matching beretta 96 40 S&W handgun. This combo is nie because of magazine compatibility. Both are loaded with Winchester Ranger 155 gr HP. These are very hot rounds and are some of the most lethal rounds for this caliber. If in a colder environment, swap for the winchester ranger 180 gr bonded hp rnd if you can find it. Any of these work, except maybe the 380 acp. This round is pretty tame, so being able to easily have followup shots makes up for the lack of true one shot drops. Make sure you get a quality tac light, as seeing the bad guy is the first step in resolving the problem.
